Content for SEO: writing pages that reach the top

The days of writing text for a robot are over. Today the page that answers a person's question faster and more completely wins. But «write for people» is too general a piece of advice, so here is the specific version: what a working page is made of.

In short

A page reaches the top when it answers the query more completely than its competitors, not when it holds more keywords. Structure is what works: a heading with the substance, the answer in the opening paragraphs, division into sections, prices and answers to common questions. Length is not the goal: a short page that closes the question outranks a long empty one.

The core principle: the page closes the task

A person arrived with a question. A good page answers it so completely that they do not have to go back to search. That is the signal algorithms have learned to read best.

Easy to test: imagine the person has read your page. Are there questions left that will send them to a competitor? If so, the page is unfinished, however many keywords it contains.

The structure of a service page

The order of blocks is not dogma, but it mirrors the order of questions in a customer's head.

  1. HeadingWhat the service is, named in the customer's words rather than the industry's.
  2. A short answerThe first paragraph answers the main question immediately, without three sentences of warm-up.
  3. Price or price rangeEven a «from» figure beats nothing. A page without numbers loses everyone unwilling to call just to ask the cost.
  4. What is includedA specific list of work, not promises.
  5. How it goesStages and timings. It removes anxiety and answers half the future questions.
  6. Who it suits and who it does notAn honest limitation builds more trust than claiming to suit everyone.
  7. ProofExamples, reviews, certificates, photos of the work.
  8. Answers to questionsThe ones people actually ask on the phone.
  9. A clear actionOne button, and it is obvious what happens after pressing it.

What to do about keywords

Keywords are needed, but not the way they were ten years ago. The task is for the search engine to understand the topic of the page, not for keyword density to hit a percentage.

  • The main query in the h1 and the title, phrased naturally.
  • Variants and synonyms in subheadings and through the text where they fit.
  • Related vocabulary appears by itself if you write to the point. Text about installing an air conditioner inevitably contains «mounting», «line», «outdoor unit».
  • No repetition for its own sake and no unnatural constructions like «dentist Fergana price».

A simple test: read the text out loud. If a phrase sounds like something a living person would never say, it needs rewriting. Search engines have judged the naturalness of language for a long time now.

What length is needed

There is no universal number. Length is set by the topic, not by a quota. Look at what is in the top for your query: if those pages are 800 words, a 6,000-word article will not help and will more likely hurt — nobody will read it to the end.

Page typeUsual lengthWhat matters more than length
Service page500–1,200 wordsPrice, scope of work, timings
Product category300–600 wordsThe catalogue itself and its filters
Explanatory article1,200–2,500 wordsCompleteness of the answer and structure
News or announcement200–500 wordsFreshness and facts

How to make text readable

  • Paragraphs of 2–4 sentences. A wall of text is unreadable on a phone.
  • Subheadings every 2–4 paragraphs so the page can be skimmed.
  • Lists where there is a list — but do not turn the whole page into one.
  • Tables for comparisons: they read faster than prose saying the same thing.
  • Emphasis only on what matters. If everything is bold, nothing is.
  • No three-paragraph introduction. The answer belongs in the opening lines.

Typical mistakes

  • Text about yourself instead of text about the customer. «We are a dynamically developing company» answers no query at all.
  • One page for ten services. None of them will rank.
  • Copying from competitors. Duplicates do not rank and sometimes actively hurt.
  • Text for the sake of text at the bottom of the page. The grey block under the catalogue that nobody reads stopped working long ago.
  • No updates. A page with two-year-old prices loses the trust of people and algorithms alike.

How to tell whether the text works

Not by positions in the first week but by how people behave over a month.

  • How long they spend on the page and whether they scroll to the end.
  • Whether they go straight back to search after landing.
  • Whether they move deeper into the site.
  • Whether they submit an enquiry from that page.

A page that holds attention and leads to action rises sooner or later. A page people leave after five seconds never will, however many keywords it contains.

Frequent questions

Can text be written by a neural network?

As a draft and an accelerator, yes. As finished text without review, no: the model does not know your prices, timings or specifics and will confidently write things you do not offer. Responsibility for the facts stays with you.

How many times should a keyword appear?

As many times as comes out naturally. Counting frequency deliberately is an approach from the previous decade that today does more harm than good.

Should old articles be updated?

Yes, and it is often more profitable than writing new ones. Updating dates, prices and facts on a page that already ranks produces results faster than a text written from scratch.

What if the top is all large aggregators?

Fighting for general queries is pointless. Enter through narrow ones: specific services, districts, situations. Aggregators are weaker there and the person is closer to a decision.

How many new pages should we publish a month?

Two strong ones beat ten weak ones. A guide for a small company is 2–4 pages a month with real research, prices and answers to questions.

What should we do with old articles that bring no traffic?

Handle them one by one: update if the topic is alive; merge with a similar one if there are several; delete with a redirect if the topic is dead. Keeping dead pages around for no reason is not worth it.
