Yandex Business: setting up a listing and managing your rating

In Russia and parts of the CIS, Yandex Maps often brings more enquiries than Google. The logic is similar but the details differ — especially the role of the rating, which is visible immediately and influences choice more strongly.

In short

A Yandex listing brings visits and calls even without a site, and the rating affects your position more than anything else. Fill in categories, services with prices, hours and photos — and set up a routine for collecting reviews. Reply to every review, negative ones included: those replies are read by the people still choosing.

How it differs from Google

Where it is strongerRussia, parts of the CISGlobally, Uzbekistan
RatingShown large, influences choice heavilyShown, influences choice
Paid promotionAvailable inside the serviceThrough advertising

The practical conclusion: work with both services, but the priority depends on geography. In Ufa the return from Yandex is higher; in Fergana, from Google.

What to fill in first

  1. Verify the organisationWithout verification the listing is visible but not manageable and ranks lower.
  2. CategoriesThe equivalent of Google's categories: they determine which queries you appear for. One primary, several secondary.
  3. Complete contactsPhone, website, messengers, social profiles. Every channel is another way in.
  4. Opening hoursIncluding breaks and days off. Yandex shows «closed» prominently and that filters out part of your audience.
  5. PhotosEntrance, interior, product or process, the team. Real ones, not stock.
  6. Products and servicesWith prices. This block appears directly in the listing and answers the person's main question.

How the rating works and why it matters more than it seems

The rating on Yandex is shown immediately and large. All else being equal, a person picks 4.8 over 4.3 even if the second company is closer.

Three things are worth understanding about the rating:

  • It is not a plain average. Recent reviews weigh more than old ones, and reviews from active users weigh more than those from new accounts.
  • Some reviews are never published. The algorithm filters out suspicious ones: from new accounts, written in batches, with identical phrasing.
  • Silence hurts. A company with no new reviews for several months gradually loses ground to active competitors.

Trying to raise the rating quickly with bought reviews almost always ends with them being hidden, and sometimes with the listing demoted. Twenty genuine reviews work better than a hundred filtered ones.

How to collect reviews honestly

  1. Identify the moment the customer is pleased — right after the service, not a week later.
  2. Create a short link to the review form and a QR code for the counter.
  3. Assign someone responsible: without that the request is forgotten in the first week.
  4. Ask in person rather than by mass mailing: the response rate differs several times over.
  5. Reply to every review within a day.

What to do about negative reviews

A negative review is not a disaster but a chance to show how you work. People read it more carefully than ten positive ones and judge your reply specifically.

  • Reply calmly and to the point, without arguing or making excuses.
  • Acknowledge the problem if there was one and say what has been done so it does not recur.
  • Move the conversation to a private channel: «write to us and we will sort it out».
  • Do not delete it and do not try to drown it under a wave of fake praise.
  • Report only clearly false reviews — from people who were never your customers, or containing abuse.

The service offers paid options: priority placement, a map marker, advertising captions. These work, but they do not replace the basic work.

A sensible order: first bring the listing to a complete state and gather reviews, then consider paid promotion. Advertising an empty listing with a 3.9 rating simply shows more people what puts them off.

Products and services in the listing

The section people fill in least often, although it appears directly in the listing and answers the customer's main question: what does it cost.

  • List your main services as separate items, not as one list inside the description.
  • Give prices or a range. An item without a price loses to an item with one.
  • Add a short description to each: what is included, how long it takes.
  • Update when prices change — an outdated price list is worse than none.

The listing and the site reinforce each other when the data matches and undermine each other when it does not.

WhatHow it should be
NameMatching letter for letter
AddressThe same written format
PhoneThe same number, in the same format
Opening hoursMatching, breaks included
ServicesNamed identically

On top of that it is worth placing organisation markup on the site — then the search engine sees the same details in machine-readable form too.

Typical mistakes

  • The listing is unverified — and therefore barely shows.
  • Keywords added to the name: «Smile Clinic — the best dentist». That breaks the rules.
  • A home or warehouse address given where customers never go.
  • Stock photos or ones three years old.
  • Reviews left without replies for months.
  • The products and services section left empty.

Frequent questions

Can we manage the listing ourselves?

Yes, and in the first month it is not hard: filling it in takes a few hours. The difficulty is consistency — photos, posts and replies to reviews need constant attention.

Why do my reviews not appear?

Usually a filter triggers: a review from a new account, several reviews in a row from one device, text that looks templated. Reviews from real customers on their own accounts almost always go through.

What matters more — the rating or the number of reviews?

Both. A 5.0 rating on three reviews inspires less trust than 4.7 on two hundred. People look at the combination.

How often should the listing be updated?

Photos and posts monthly, contacts and hours quarterly, replies to reviews within a day.

Do replies to reviews affect rankings?

Directly, weakly; indirectly, noticeably. A company that replies looks alive and people choose it more often. And how people behave already affects the results.

Should we switch on paid promotion straight away?

No. The listing must first be complete and have reviews. Paid promotion of an empty listing simply shows people faster what puts them off.
