Social media advertising: who it suits

Paid search catches people who are already looking. Social advertising shows an offer to people who were not. That is a fundamentally different situation, and everything else follows from it: different niches, different copy, a different cost per request.

In short

Social advertising shows your ad to people who were not looking for you, so the first job is not to sell but to stop the scroll. It works well where the result shows in a photograph: salons, dentistry, renovation, furniture, clothing. It works badly where the service is needed urgently: those people go to search, not to a feed.

What decides itMatching the queryThe creative and the offer

In social advertising the person did not ask for your ad. So the first job is not to sell but to stop the scroll. An ad that would work beautifully in search will simply be ignored in a feed.

Which businesses it suits

  • Visual niches: beauty salons, dentistry, renovation, clothing, furniture, cafés. The result is visible in a photograph.
  • Impulse purchases: inexpensive goods and services decided on quickly.
  • New products: things nobody searches for yet, because they do not know they exist.
  • Events and promotions: time-limited offers.
  • Narrow audiences: when you know exactly who your client is by interest and behaviour.

Conversely, it works poorly where a service is needed urgently and out of necessity: towing, lock opening, emergency repairs. There the person searches, and the place for advertising is in search.

How audiences are chosen

  1. Start broadModern algorithms learn on their own. Too narrow an audience at the start stops the system from finding a pattern.
  2. Add geography and ageA basic restriction that makes sense almost always.
  3. Build your own audiencesPeople who visited the site, interacted with the account, or are in your database.
  4. Create lookalikesThe system finds people similar to your clients. This is usually the most effective audience.
  5. Exclude people who already boughtSo you do not spend budget on existing clients.

The creative decides more than the settings

In social advertising the gap between a good and a bad ad is measured in multiples, not percentages. With identical settings, one image can deliver a cost per request half that of another.

  • The first half-second decides whether the person stops or scrolls past.
  • Real photographs almost always outperform stock imagery.
  • A «before and after» result is one of the strongest formats wherever it applies.
  • Text on an image must be readable on a small screen without zooming.
  • Video is usually more effective than a still, but takes more effort.
  • Any single ad burns out: after 2–4 weeks of running it needs replacing.

Plan a stream of ads, not a single one. Constantly replacing creatives is not a luxury but a condition of the channel working: the same image stops working once the audience has seen it.

Where to send people

Coming out of a feed, a person is not ready for a long form or a serious commitment. Short paths work well:

  • A message in a messenger — the lowest barrier, and replies can come gradually.
  • A form inside the social network itself — no need to go anywhere.
  • A simple landing page with one action.
  • A call — for niches where calling is the norm.

Sending someone from a feed to a multi-page website is a near-guaranteed loss: they were not looking for you and will not work it out.

How to measure the result

Likes and reach are not money. Measure the same things as everywhere else: cost per request and cost per client. But allow for the longer path here — a person can see the ad, follow you, and buy a month later.

Formats and what each is for

FormatWhat forWhat matters
Single imageA simple offer, a promotionReadable text on the image
CarouselSeveral services or productsThe first card decides everything
Short videoShowing a process or a resultThe first 2 seconds
StoriesQuick contact, pollsVertical format is essential
In-network formCollecting requests without leavingMinimum fields

How to tell a creative has burned out

Burnout is not a metaphor but a measurable effect: the same audience sees the ad repeatedly and stops reacting.

  • Cost per request rises with the settings unchanged.
  • Frequency per person has passed three or four.
  • Clicks fall while reach stays the same.
  • Negative reactions and ad hides start appearing.

The cure is replacing the creative, not raising the bid. That is why social advertising is planned as a pipeline of creatives several months ahead, not as a single ad.

Frequent questions

Are social ads cheaper than paid search?

The click is cheaper, the request is often more expensive because conversion is lower. Compare by cost per client, not cost per click.

Do we need a social account to advertise?

Yes, and a live one. People often check the profile before writing. An empty account with three posts lowers trust and conversion.

How often should ads be changed?

Every 2–4 weeks as a guide, or whenever cost per request starts rising with the settings unchanged. That is the sign of burnout.

Can it be combined with paid search?

It should be. They cover different states: social advertising creates awareness, paid search catches formed demand. Together they work better than separately.

How many creatives do we need to start?

Three to five that differ in idea, not in button colour. The system will show you which works, but it needs genuinely different options to choose from.

What if the advertising brings followers instead of requests?

Change the target action and the copy: following and enquiring are different intents. If you want requests, send people into a conversation or a short page, not to a profile.
