Google Maps for business: a listing that brings customers
A Google listing is a free tool that for a local business often brings more calls than the website. Yet most companies leave it either unverified or a third filled in. Here is how to bring it to a working state.
A listing ranks higher when the category is right, there are plenty of genuine reviews, and every field is filled in — hours, services, photos, description. The category decides the most: with the wrong one you simply will not appear for the query, however close you are. Setup takes a day, the first visits arrive within a week.

What you get with a listing
A verified listing is not just a pin on a map. It is a separate page for your company inside Google, shown to the right of search results and in the top block of three companies above the ordinary results.
- Appearance in the map block for location-based and «near me» queries.
- «Call» and «Directions» buttons right in search — with no visit to the site.
- Reviews and a rating, visible before anyone clicks anywhere.
- Photos, opening hours, services and prices.
- Statistics: how many people saw the listing, called, requested directions.
The top map block shows only three companies. Getting into it usually produces more enquiries than first place in the ordinary results below it.
How to create and verify it
- Check whether a listing already existsGoogle often creates them automatically from directory data. If one exists, you claim it rather than creating another.
- Fill in the basicsExact company name, category, address, phone, website, opening hours.
- Verify ownershipUsually by postcard to the address, sometimes by call, email or video. This step is mandatory: an unverified listing barely shows at all.
- Check the map pinThe marker should sit on the entrance, not in the middle of the building or on the next street.
What to fill in and in what order
| What | How important | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Critical | Which queries you are considered for at all |
| Name | Critical | Matching reality, trust |
| Address and pin | Critical | Appearing for «near me» |
| Opening hours | High | Closed businesses show lower |
| Photos | High | Clicks and calls |
| Services and prices | High | Matching queries |
| Description | Medium | Understanding the company profile |
| Posts | Medium | A sign of an active business |
Category — the most important field
The primary category determines which queries you are shown for at all. «Dental clinic» and «Dentist» are different categories with different results. Choose the one that most precisely describes your main activity and add the rest as secondary.
Name — no extra words
The temptation to write «Smile Clinic — the best affordable dentist in Fergana» is strong, but it breaks the rules. Such names get listings demoted or suspended. The name must match the sign above the door.
Photos — an underrated lever
Companies with plenty of genuine photos get noticeably more clicks. What is needed is not stock imagery but real shots: the entrance from the street so people can find you, the interior, the staff, the work in progress, the results.
A good target is 15–20 photos to begin with and a few new ones every month.
What determines your position in the map block
Google describes three groups of factors, and they hold up well in practice.
- Relevance — how well your categories and services match the query.
- Distance — how far you are from the person or the place they named. You cannot influence this, but you can widen the zone with additional locations.
- Prominence — reviews, mentions of the company online, links, listing activity.
Of the three, you fully control the first and the third. That is why a listing with a hundred reviews and complete information outranks a neighbour who is closer but empty.
Regular work on the listing
- Reply to every review — including the positive ones, briefly.
- Update opening hours before holidays.
- Add photos once a month.
- Publish short news items and offers.
- Answer the questions users ask directly in the listing.
- Check the data quarterly: outsiders can change it.
You are not the only one who can edit the listing. Users suggest changes and Google sometimes accepts them automatically. Checking the phone number and hours quarterly takes a minute and prevents lost calls.
Typical mistakes
- The listing exists but is unverified — and therefore barely shows.
- The address given is a warehouse or a home where nobody expects customers.
- Opening hours are out of date: someone arrived at a closed door and left a review.
- The phone number differs from the one on the site.
- Several duplicate listings for one company — they split reviews and positions between them.
- Reviews with no replies, including the negative ones.
Listing statistics: what to watch
Google shows what happens with the listing, and these figures are more useful than they look: they speak about intent rather than impressions.
| Metric | What it tells you | What to do if it is low |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions in search | How often you appear in results | Check categories and services |
| Impressions on the map | Whether people see you when browsing the area | Work on reviews |
| Calls | The main result for services | Check hours and phone number |
| Directions | People are travelling to you | Check the accuracy of the pin |
| Visits to the site | They are researching further | Check that the site loads quickly |
It is also worth looking at which queries people find you by: that is a ready-made list of topics for pages on the site.
Posts and questions in the listing
Two tools almost nobody uses, although they are free and affect listing activity.
- Posts — short entries about offers, news and new services. They appear in the listing and signal that the business is active.
- User questions — anyone can ask a question in your listing. If you do not answer, a stranger may, and everyone sees their answer.
A useful move: ask the most common questions yourself and give thorough answers. That is not deception — it is filling a section with reference information people ask about on the phone anyway.
What to do when you move
- Do not create a new listingReviews and history are tied to the existing one. A new listing starts from zero.
- Change the address on the existing oneThrough the dashboard, with verification if required.
- Update the address everywhere at onceSite, every map, directories, social profiles. Discrepancies lower trust.
- Add photos of the new placeEspecially the entrance — that is how people find you.
- Announce it in a postSo regular customers do not turn up at the old address.
Frequent questions
What does a Google listing cost?
Nothing. Creating, verifying and maintaining it are free. You only pay if you want advertising inside maps.
What if we have no physical address?
If you work on the move, you can hide the address and specify a service area. You will still appear, though competing with businesses that have a location is harder.
How do we remove someone else's listing at our address?
Through a report of a duplicate or a closed business. The process is not fast but it works, especially if you are the verified owner of the main listing.
How soon do results appear?
The first impressions come right after verification. A noticeable rise in calls usually follows in 2–4 weeks, once photos and first reviews have accumulated.
Can there be two listings at one address?
Only if these are different companies with different signage and phone numbers. Duplicates of one company get merged or suspended, and until then they split reviews and positions.
What if the listing is suspended?
File an appeal with photos of your signage, documents for the premises and real contact details. Suspension is most often caused by keywords in the name or an address where customers are not received.
