«Near me» queries: how to appear in them

«Near me» has become the ordinary way to search for anything from a coffee shop to a car repair centre. But optimising literally for those words is pointless: the search engine supplies the geography itself. What you need to influence is something else.

In short

These queries go to directory listings rather than websites, and three factors decide them: distance, how complete the listing is, and reviews. You cannot change the distance; you can change the other two. Do not check your positions from the office: next to your own address you will always see yourself first.

What happens when someone searches «near me»

The search engine takes the current location — from GPS, the network, or the last known city — and looks for companies within a radius it considers reasonable for that category. For a coffee shop that is a few hundred metres, for a car service kilometres, for a niche medical service the whole city.

Then it picks not the closest but the best combination of proximity, relevance and reputation. That is why a company two blocks away with a hundred reviews beats the one next door with none.

The words «near me» in your site text or listing name are unnecessary and do not help. Worse, adding them to a company name breaks platform rules.

What you can actually influence

  1. Pin accuracyThe marker should sit on the entrance. An error of a hundred metres can push you outside the search radius for a whole neighbourhood.
  2. Categories and servicesThey determine which queries you are considered for at all. A service missing from the listing produces no impressions.
  3. Reviews and ratingThe main way to outrank those who are closer.
  4. Current opening hoursBusinesses currently closed show lower or with a label, and some people skip them entirely.
  5. Service areaFor mobile services, list the districts you travel to.
  6. Listing completenessPhotos, prices, description — all of it affects the choice after you are shown.

How to widen the radius if you are off to one side

You cannot physically move, but you can widen your zone of influence.

  • Open an additional location in the district you need, even a small one.
  • Build district pages on the site — with real information, not copies.
  • Grow your reviews: a strong listing is shown across a wider radius.
  • Work on mentions of the company on local resources.
  • For mobile services, state the service area precisely, including neighbouring districts.

What to check right now

  1. Open maps and search for yourself by your main service from a different part of the city.
  2. See who ranks above you and how their listings differ from yours.
  3. Check that your marker sits exactly on the entrance.
  4. Make sure all your services are listed individually in the profile.
  5. Compare your review count with those above you.

This review takes fifteen minutes and usually shows immediately what is missing.

Categories: why they matter more than the address

The category determines which queries you are considered for at all. If you are a dental clinic but your primary category says «medical centre», you may not appear for «dentist near me» at all — no matter how close you are.

  • The primary category is what you do most of the time.
  • Secondary ones follow your real services, not «just in case».
  • Look at the categories of those above you: often that is the whole difference.
  • When a new service line appears, add a category rather than rewriting the description.

How to widen your presence without a second office

Opening a location in every district is impossible. But there are ways to widen the zone where you are shown.

  1. ReviewsA strong listing shows across a wider radius. This is the main lever available.
  2. Mentions in the districtLocal communities, directories, partners near the district you want.
  3. District pagesWith real information: travel times, specifics, examples of work there.
  4. Service areaFor mobile services, list the districts explicitly.
  5. A pick-up or drop-off pointA small presence in the district you need is sometimes cheaper than a full office.

Why the same company is not visible to everyone

Local results are personal. Two people at opposite ends of the same city get different lists for the same query — and that is normal, not a fault.

An important practical consequence follows: do not check your positions from your own office. Sitting in your own building you will almost always see yourself first, simply because you are closest to yourself. The real picture comes from checking from the districts where your customers live.

Check yourself in a private window and from several points in the city. Otherwise you are measuring your own location rather than your position.

The effect of opening hours

An underrated factor. A business marked as closed shows lower and gets fewer taps: the person needs the problem solved now.

  • State real hours, including breaks.
  • Update the schedule before holidays — platforms ask about this deliberately.
  • If you work later than competitors, that is an advantage: for evening queries you are left alone in the field.
  • Mark round-the-clock services explicitly — for urgent queries that is the deciding signal.

Frequent questions

Should we write «near me» on the site?

No. The search engine determines geography itself, and such insertions look unnatural and do not help.

Why is a competitor further away but above me?

Almost always because of reviews, listing completeness or category match. Proximity is only one of three factors, and not the main one.

Does this work without a physical address?

Partly. Mobile services can state a service area, but impressions will be weaker than for companies with a location.

Why am I visible during the day but not in the evening?

Most likely your listing shows hours by which you are already closed. Closed businesses show lower and some people simply skip them.

Does the number of photos affect impressions?

Impressions themselves, weakly; the choice after being shown, strongly. A listing with fifteen genuine photos gets noticeably more taps than one with two.

How do we check positions in different districts?

In a private window with a different point set on the map. Checking from your own office always shows you first and tells you nothing about reality.
