What SEO is, in plain words
SEO is surrounded by myths: some think it is magic, others that it is tricking the search engine. In reality it is straightforward engineering work: make it easy for the algorithm to understand your site and easy for a person to get an answer on it. Here is how it actually works.
SEO is the work of getting a search engine to show your site for your clients' queries. It has three parts: the site's technical condition, the content of the pages, and outside mentions. First changes show after two to three months, a stable result after six to twelve; nobody achieves it faster.

How a search engine learns about your site at all
A search engine's work has three stages, and a site can drop out at any of them.
- CrawlingA robot follows links and finds pages. If no link points to a page and it is not in the sitemap, the robot will never know it exists.
- IndexingA discovered page is parsed and added to the database. Anything the robot judges to be junk is filtered out here: duplicates, empty pages, technical copies.
- RankingWhen someone enters a query, matching pages are selected from the database and put in order. That is the results page you see.
A common situation: the site exists, the pages look good, and there is no traffic. Start checking from stage one. Sometimes half the pages are simply not in the index — and no amount of work on the text will fix that.
What the algorithm ranks sites by
Nobody knows the exact formula, including people who work at the search companies: it involves hundreds of factors and changes constantly. But the major groups of factors are known and confirmed in practice.
Match to the query
The obvious one: the page must answer what was asked. Not merely contain the right words, but actually answer. A «Services» page listing twenty areas answers «cavity treatment price» worse than a dedicated page about cavity treatment with a price on it.
Quality of the answer
Algorithms have learned to judge whether a person was satisfied. If people land on a page and return to search five seconds later, that signals they did not find their answer. If they stay, read and move deeper into the site, the signal is the opposite.
Technical condition
Loading speed, correct behaviour on a phone, absence of errors, a clear URL structure. This gives no advantage by itself, but a poor state gets in the way badly: a slow site loses to a fast one when everything else is equal.
Authority
Links from other sites and mentions of the company. The logic is simple: if industry resources, directories and media write about you, you are more likely to be a real company than a fly-by-night.
Behaviour and reputation
People returning to the site, direct visits by name, reviews, brand mentions. For commercial niches this has become noticeably more important than it was a few years ago.
What SEO work consists of
When a contractor says «we do promotion», there are five areas behind that phrase. If one is missing, the result usually does not arrive.
| Area | What is done | When the effect shows |
|---|---|---|
| Technical | Speed, indexing, errors, duplicates, mobile version | 2–6 weeks |
| Keyword research | Collecting queries, grouping them, mapping to pages | the basis for everything else |
| Structure | Creating the needed pages, internal linking, navigation | 1–3 months |
| Content | Text that answers queries rather than being stuffed with words | 2–4 months |
| Authority | Mentions, directories, industry platforms | 3–6 months |
Why it takes months
Three reasons, none of which depend on how hard the contractor works.
- The robot needs time. Crawling the site, re-indexing changed pages, gathering data on how people behave — that is weeks, not hours.
- The algorithm needs confirmation. One change means nothing. The system looks at a stable picture: the page holds people for a month, not a day.
- Competitors do not stand still. You are not rising in a vacuum but overtaking people who have been doing the same thing for longer.
White-hat and black-hat methods
The difference is simple: white-hat methods genuinely improve the site, black-hat ones try to trick the algorithm. The second kind gives a quick effect and ends in penalties — sometimes after a month, sometimes after a year.
| Technique | What it is | How it ends |
|---|---|---|
| Bulk link buying | Hundreds of links from sites built to sell links | Demotion or a filter |
| Hidden text | Keywords in the background colour or off-screen | Removal from the index |
| Keyword stuffing | Text packed with repetitions of the query | Demotion, worse conversion |
| Doorway pages | Pages created only to intercept traffic | The whole site removed |
| Faking behaviour | Simulated visits and clicks | A filter that is very hard to lift |
Penalties are dangerous not because positions fall but because recovery takes months and is not guaranteed. Saving money at the start ends with losing a site built over years.
What SEO cannot do
An honest list of limitations that rarely comes up during a sales conversation.
- It does not create demand. If nobody searches for the service in words, search will not help and other channels are needed.
- It does not guarantee a specific position. Nobody but the algorithm decides who comes first.
- It does not work instantly. Not for money and not through connections.
- It does not fix a bad product. Traffic will come but enquiries will not, if the price or the service does not stand comparison.
- It does not last forever without upkeep. Competitors catch up, algorithms change, content goes stale.
Frequent questions
How long does SEO take?
First movement in 2–3 months, a noticeable flow in 6–12. Faster in quiet niches, slower in competitive ones. It cannot be faster, because the constraint is not the contractor's effort but the speed of the search engines themselves.
Can first place be guaranteed?
No. Positions are set by an algorithm nobody outside can influence. What can be guaranteed is scope of work, methods and transparent reporting.
Do we need SEO if we already advertise?
Yes, if you are in it for the long run. Advertising rents traffic; search is an asset you own. After a year the cost per enquiry from organic is usually noticeably lower.
What matters more — text or the technical side?
The technical side is a condition, text is the substance. A perfect text on a page that is not indexed delivers nothing. But a flawlessly configured site with no answers to queries will not rise either.
Does the age of a site affect rankings?
Indirectly. Age itself is not a factor, but an older site usually has more accumulated mentions and behavioural history. A new site can outrank an old one if it answers the query better.
Should pages that already rank be updated?
Yes, otherwise they get overtaken. Checking prices and facts every six months and adding what competitors lack is enough.
