What AI Search is and why it is a new customer channel

Search habits are changing faster than most people think. Some no longer open a search engine — they ask a language model: «recommend a good contractor», «which system should I choose». The model answers with a list of three to five companies, and that is a fundamentally new situation for business.

In short

People increasingly ask ChatGPT and similar services instead of a search engine, and get a ready answer naming two or three companies. Being in that answer is a new channel of clients, and it is still almost empty. Models draw on open sources, so you influence it with the same tools as search, but with different emphases.

What changed in how people behave

Ordinary search returns ten links and leaves the choice to the person. A language model returns a finished answer and names a few companies. The difference is huge: in search, tenth place still brings visits; in a model answer you were either named or you were not.

The second difference is the nature of the query. People type keywords into search: «dentist Fergana». They ask a model the whole question: «where in Fergana can I get a tooth treated under a microscope, with evening appointments». Answering that requires understanding text, not matching words.

This does not replace search, it adds to it. But the channel is growing, competition in it is still low, and the cost of entry today is incomparably lower than it will be in a year or two.

Where models get information about companies

Two mechanisms need to be told apart here, because working with them is different.

MechanismHow it worksWhat you can influence
Model knowledgeWhat the model absorbed during trainingMentions online, recognisability
Real-time searchThe model searches the web and cites sourcesThe content and structure of your pages

The second mechanism matters more today and it can be managed. When a model searches the web, it opens pages, extracts facts from them and composes an answer. You can get into that answer if your page states the fact explicitly.

Why ordinary SEO helps but is not enough

Good search positions increase the chance that the model finds your page. But from there the differences begin.

  • A search engine only needs the page to be relevant. A model needs to extract a specific fact: a price, a deadline, a condition.
  • A search engine shows the whole page. A model takes a fragment — the one that directly answers the question.
  • A search engine accounts for how people behave. A model cannot see that and relies on text and structure.
  • A search engine ranks ten links. A model names two or three companies — the bar is higher.

The practical conclusion: a page saying «our services — quality work, delivered on time» is useless to a model. A page saying «Cavity treatment — from $40, 40-minute appointment, open until 21:00» is ready material for an answer.

Who benefits most from this channel

  • Services with a complex choice, where the person does not know exactly what they need and asks for advice.
  • B2B, where the decision is studied long and in detail.
  • Niches with expensive clicks, where ordinary advertising eats the margin.
  • New and narrow areas, where ordinary search is occupied by aggregators.

It gives the least to businesses with impulsive demand and where geography decides everything: nobody asks a model to recommend the coffee shop next door.

How the customer journey changes

The old path looked like this: query — list of links — three open tabs — comparison — call. For some people it is now shorter: a question to the model — a ready list of two or three companies — a visit to one of them.

For a business this changes two things. First, the funnel narrows: where search put ten companies in front of a person, this puts three. Second, facts matter more: the model compares parameters, not website design — price, timing, conditions, reviews.

What happens if there is no information about you

A model does not leave a blank — it answers with what it found. If your data is missing, it names a competitor. If your data is incomplete or contradictory, the model may answer inaccurately: quote the wrong price, an old address, or attribute a service you do not offer.

This is fixed not by complaining but by sources: the more consistent and recent mentions with the same facts, the more accurate the answer. That is why work on AI Search starts not with the website but with putting all data about the company in order at once.

Where to start on a minimal budget

  1. Put company data in order: website, maps, directories — the same name, address, phone and services everywhere.
  2. Add concrete facts to your 5–7 main pages: prices, timing, what is included and what is not.
  3. Assemble a questions-and-answers block from what people actually ask on the phone.
  4. Check that AI crawlers are not blocked from your site.
  5. Once a quarter, ask the models yourself and see whether you are named.

This set is enough to understand whether the channel works in your niche before any serious investment.

What this channel does not give

An honest list of limitations worth knowing before you invest.

  • No guarantees: the rules for forming answers are not published and they change.
  • No precise statistics: you will not get a report saying «you were mentioned 340 times».
  • The volume is still smaller than search — this is an addition, not a replacement.
  • The model can get facts about you wrong, and that has to be corrected through sources.

The good news is that almost all AI Search work simultaneously improves ordinary SEO: structured pages, honest facts, answers to questions. You do not spend the effort twice.

Frequent questions

Does this bring customers already or is it for the future?

It already brings them, though the volumes are more modest than from search. The point of entering now is low competition: a place is taken once and is easier to hold than to win back later.

Can the result be measured?

Indirectly. There is no direct reporting, but you can see growth in direct visits, brand mentions and searches for your company name. You can also ask the models yourself periodically and record whether you are named.

Does a small business need this?

If your customers research before buying — yes. If they buy impulsively and by location, deal with maps first.

Do we have to pay to appear in answers?

No, there is currently no paid placement in model answers. You pay for work on content and data, exactly as in ordinary SEO.

Does AI Search interfere with ordinary search?

No, quite the opposite. Structured pages with honest facts and answers to questions serve the search engine and the model equally well.

How do I tell whether the channel works in my niche at all?

Ask the models 10–15 questions your customers come to you with. If the model answers with a list of companies, the channel is alive. If it drifts into generalities, there is no demand here yet.
